Engagement Photography Session at Devil’s Lake State Park
This engagement session was on a stunning late summer evening in August, at Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin. Summer and fall are both beautiful times of year here, but if you plan on getting in the water (and you should!) you’re going to want to come in the summer.
When people ask if it’s ok to get in the water, I always say yes! I feel like it always creates some great moments, movement, and lighting. Doing things that might feel a little extra or crazy tend to really come through and make your photos shine.
One of my favorite things about photography sessions in Devil’s Lake State Park is all of the options available to you. Between the beach, forest, getting in the lake, and going up the bluffs there is so much variety here.
Tips & Tricks for a Great Devil’s Lake Photo Session
Go either early in the morning or golden hour. Especially in the peak summer months! There will always be other people here, but by avoiding the peak times of the day for water and beach activities you’ll have a little more room to breathe.
For sunset photos you want to be on the east bluff, so that the sun and lake is behind you! Likewise the south shore has better sunset views, but is usually busier than the north shore.
If you are planning on making your way around the park on your session I am all for it! But bring plenty of water and an extra pair of shoes to walk around in.
If you can, go on a weekday! Monday through Thursday are far less busy and make for a much easier time finding areas with less people around.
Do not forget about Parfrey's Glen!
Not too far from Devil’s Lake State Park is Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area. This is a beautiful spot that has a completely different feel. The dramatic geography is incredible for photos, and it is a much shorter (maybe a bit more slippery) hike.
