The Best Proposal Locations In Wisconsin
Memorial Union Terrace
The Memorial Union is a special place to all of my fellow University of Wisconsin Badgers, and a perfect place for your proposal! The architecture is beautiful, the vibe of a summer evening at the terrace is unmatched.
Just at this one spot there are a ton of options for a location to propose; the docks, front entrance with the stairs and arches, on a sailboat looking back at the Memorial Union, sitting on the shore of Lake Mendota with some Babcock Ice Cream, and so many more.
You also have easy access to other University of Wisconsin Campus Icons like the Lakeshore Path, Bascom Hill, The Wisconsin Club, State Street, and more. The best proposal locations like the Memorial Union have this flexibility and variety of other great locations nearby for the celebratory photos after the proposal.
Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Madison
Immerse yourselves in the beauty of Olbrich Botanical Gardens, where lush landscapes and blooming flowers provide the perfect setting for a romantic proposal. Being at a place like Olbrich that is curated and just so breathtaking by itself makes the process of taking photos easy.
You do need a permit to take photos here, but that means there is overall less photo competition. After your beautiful proposal here we can stop for a pint at the Olbrich Beer Garden to celebrate!
Olbrich Botanical Gardens is a beautiful place most of the year, spring, summer, and fall. My favorite time of the year here is spring when the cherry blossoms are blooming. It is so pretty and unique but they don’t last long!
From the tranquil Thai Pavilion to the fragrant Rose Garden, (under construction until further notice!) Every corner offers a picturesque backdrop for your moment.
Wisconsin State Capitol Building
For a proposal this is definitely a classic spot. But what is wrong with a guaranteed good background?
Nothing.
Inside and out, the Wisconsin State Capitol building is one of the most beautiful in the country. It makes a stunning backdrop for a proposal inside and out.
I love the streets like State Street of course, but also MLK Boulevard looking at the capitol.
There are so many possibilities! A grand moment on top of the steps, a picnic on the lawn with the flowers around you. The possibilities are endless.
Picnic Point
Looking for more of a natural vibe? Escape to nature at Picnic Point, the peninsula into Lake Mendota.
Here we have plenty of beach-y shoreline and trees to play with. There is something special about fall here too, which would be my pick for the best time to propose here. All of the fall colors on the Madison skyline are stunning.
Summer here is beautiful but Picnic Point is an area where you will very much experience the algae blooms that plague all of the Madison Lake chain.
Take a leisurely stroll along the wooded trails, find a secluded spot by the water's edge, and capture the beauty of your proposal against the backdrop of Madison's stunning lakeshore.
Allen Centennial Gardens
Discover one of Madison’s hidden gems at Allen Centennial Gardens, nestled on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. It is a beautiful spot similar to Olbrich Gardens, but a little less busy.
With its charming pathways, colorful flower beds, and serene ponds, the Allen Centennial Garden is a little Madison oasis that provides a picturesque setting for a heartfelt proposal.
My favorite part of the garden is the wooden structure with all of the vines all over it. A perfect scene for a proposal in Madison!
Monona Terrace
Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Monona and the downtown skyline from the stunning Monona Terrace! I love the rooftop terrace for all kinds of photos but it's a beautiful place for a proposal with some of the best views of the Madison skyline in the city.
The path that leads to the Monona Terrace from MLK Boulevard is my favorite view of the Capitol Building in the city.
Whether you propose on the rooftop terrace or by the lakeside promenade, the modern architecture and scenic views will create a memorable backdrop for your story.
An interesting twist here would be a proposal on a boat from the lake with evening views of the skyline behind you!
The Edgewater
The Edgewater is an absolutely stunning location for a proposal!
Summer and warm evenings here down on the dock and lake front options are phenomenal options for a proposal. The Edgewater gets beautiful sunset views over Lake Mendota in the summer!
Winter proposals here are just as beautiful, the ice rink has an amazing vibe during the holidays that is right out of a movie.
No matter what time of year you propose at The Edgewater, you can have a perfect surprise afterparty with friends and family in one of their private event spaces.
James Madison Park
One of my favorite things about Madison is the amount of parks and green spaces. James Madison Park has great views of Lake Mendota at sunset, and great proximity to the State Capitol Building and downtown for the best of all worlds.
With great sunset views of Lake Mendota, James Madison Park is a perfect spot for a proposal on a summer evening!
The UW-Madison Arboretum
Embark on a romantic nature walk (you can tell it's a badger because of the way it is) through the UW-Madison Arboretum, where scenic trails, ponds, and just the vibe of nature create a peaceful setting for your proposal.
With its diverse landscapes and secluded spots, the arboretum offers endless opportunities for capturing your story.
My favorite time of year for a proposal in the UW Madison Arboretum is fall. I love the warmth of the fall colors!
This is really one of those places where I just pretend to be birding around the park all casually. Then bam, documenting your proposal.
Tenney Park
Tenney Park offers great views of sunsets on Lake Mendota from the area around the locks.
Escape some of the hustle and bustle of the city at Tenney Park, where tranquil lagoons and picturesque bridges provide a romantic backdrop for your proposal. Capture the beauty of your love amidst this beloved Madison park.
Tenney Park is beautiful year round but I think my favorite time of the year for a proposal at Tenney would be winter. A proposal on one of the frozen ponds would be magical.
Olin Park
Olin has some of the best sunset views of the Madison skyline and great more nature-y paths. I think my favorite time of year here is fall!
One thing I do love for any location around Madison is that nothing is too far apart. It is an easy hop skip and a jump from Olin to downtown for a completely different environment.
Madison’s Lake Shores, Monona, Mendota and more
Whether you paddle out on a canoe or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, the tranquil waters and scenic vistas will set the stage for a beautiful proposal. There are too many options to name, but any of your favorite spots on the lake would be perfect.
The coolest photos are if you two are willing to take a dip! The reflections and feel of photos in the water are unmatched.
The lakes have a ton of possibilities! I would highly recommend going out on a vintage wooden boat at golden hour for some incredible views and Lake Como vibes.
While I definitely prefer proposals on the Madison lakes when it is warm. You can also propose on the lakes when they are frozen in the winter. The tricky thing is they don’t seem to be freezing quite as much the last couple of years.
Eno Vino & Rooftop Restaurants
There are quite a few, but one of my favorites is Eno Vino. The views of downtown Madison are incredible, and really elevate any proposal. You can of course propose over dinner, but:
But here is what I recommend and have done before with my couples:
The trick with any of these places. Is to find one that will let you propose and take some photos before they actually open for dinner service.
Eno Vino is also the perfect place for a surprise afterparty and proposal reception after a proposal anywhere in the city.
Wisconsin State Historical Society
Celebrate your love story amidst Wisconsin's rich history at the Wisconsin State Historical Society. Whether you propose in the grandeur of the Reading Room (big Harry Potter type vibes) or amidst the historic exhibits, the timeless elegance of this landmark will add a touch of sophistication to your special moment.
I love the stunning marble staircases here too!
Lucille
Lucille has maybe the most perfect table for a proposal in Madison. There is one table that is perfectly framed by the window facing the Wisconsin State Capitol on the second level of the restaurant.
It is something out of a movie set. Perfection. The Pizza is also super good.
You can also have your private celebratory reception or some amazing photos down in the bank vault! The vibe would be so elegant and timeless!
One more vote for a slice of pizza with your proposal, or the cheese curds are also phenomenal here.
State Street
Discover a hidden gem of romance at the Gates of Heaven Synagogue, one of Madison's oldest and most iconic landmarks. With its beautiful architecture and scenic location in James Madison Park, this historic site provides a unique backdrop for your proposal photos.
Your favorite coffee shop
There are too many to name but you can’t go too wrong!
Favorite Bar
Maybe a little more of a wild card. But I’m just trying to be helpful. Whiskey Jacks?
University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus
Celebrate your love story at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, where historic buildings, lush green spaces, and vibrant energy combine to create a romantic atmosphere. From Bascom Hill to the Memorial Union Terrace, every corner offers a picturesque setting for your proposal photo shoot.
Rent A Cool Old Boat And Go Out On The Lakes
This is a bucket list item of mine. I am dying for a couple to find someone who has one of those cool vintage wooden boats to ride out on the lakes and take some photos. I think this would give some incredible Italian Lake Como type of vibes.
The Best Places To Propose Around Milwaukee
Lakefront Promenade, Lakefront State Park, and Veterans Park
With its sweeping views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline, the Lakefront Promenade is a quintessential spot for a proposal in Milwaukee. Capture the beauty of Lake Michigan at sunset or the twinkling city lights at night as you propose against this stunning backdrop.
I love the Milwaukee skyline views from any of the different parks here on the city's lakeshore. All of them are great spots for a proposal.
Milwaukee Art Museum
Elevate your proposal with the iconic architecture of the Milwaukee Art Museum! Whether you choose to pop the question on the museum's grand staircase or amidst the art-filled galleries, this cultural landmark offers a sophisticated setting for your unforgettable moment.
The Milwaukee Art Museum is stunning inside and out. Places like this offer truly endless possibilities for photos. The photo permit cost is well worth it for memories that will last a lifetime.
Historic Third Ward
Immerse yourselves in the charm of Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward, where historic buildings, and art galleries create an incredible ambiance that is hard to find anywhere else.
Anywhere works! Your favorite coffee shop, bar, or restaurant. Around any of the beautiful architecture or rooftop!
This is a great place to propose all year round. But my favorite time of the year for a proposal is summer. Summer evenings here are so beautiful, there are so many string lights to play with.
Atwater Park & Beach
For a proposal with a touch of beachside romance, head to Atwater Beach along the shores of Lake Michigan. Whether you opt for a private sunset picnic or a romantic walk along the sandy shores, Atwater Beach provides a picturesque backdrop for your proposal.
This is one of my favorite locations, with an honorable mention to Bradford Beach as well. I feel like you can avoid a little bit of the largest crowds at Atwater Beach vs Bradford Beach.
Milwaukee Riverwalk
Stroll hand in hand along the Milwaukee Riverwalk and discover hidden pockets of romance amidst the city's bustling waterfront. From charming bridges to scenic overlooks, the Riverwalk offers countless opportunities for a memorable proposal photo shoot.
The Riverwalk takes you through the Third Ward all the way to views of the Daniel Hoan Memorial Bridge if you want it to. I love this because you can of course step right into the Third Ward itself for photos too!
Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory - The Domes
Escape to a tropical paradise at the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, also known as The Domes.
Whether you propose amidst the lush foliage of the Tropical Dome or the colorful blooms of the Floral Show Dome, this botanical oasis offers a romantic setting for your declaration of love.
This is one of those places where people who don’t know that The Domes will have a hard time believing you that this is Milwaukee.
I love the domes for an incredible touch of green, especially during the winter months when there is only snow, ice, and wind outside. The weather is always a hot and humid 85 in the jungle dome!
Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum
Escape to the Mediterranean-inspired gardens of the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum for a proposal surrounded by beauty and tranquility. This is seriously a little slice of Italy, the feel of the entire venue is unlike anywhere else.
With its lush greenery, ornate fountains, and panoramic views of Lake Michigan, this not-so-hidden gem offers a romantic setting for your special moment.
This is also one of the top wedding venues in the city! Be sure to plan a proposal here ahead of time and grab a photo permit!
Milwaukee County Zoo
Add a playful twist to your proposal with a visit to the Milwaukee County Zoo. Whether you pop the question in front of the elephants, amidst the colorful blooms of the botanical gardens, or under the twinkling lights of the Zoo Lights display, the zoo offers a special backdrop for your love story.
Milwaukee River Cruise / Vintage Boat Rental
Embark on a river cruise along the Milwaukee River and propose amidst the city's sparkling skyline.
Whether you choose a sunset dinner cruise or a private charter, the views will set the stage for an unforgettable proposal. There are a ton of different options! Find one that fits the vibe you're going for.
I am a strong advocate for an evening boat ride. The sun setting with the Milwaukee skyline behind you for your proposal would be unreal.
Milwaukee Central Library
Book enthusiasts rejoice!
The main rotunda in the Milwaukee Central Library is stunning! I love the architecture and the feel of the space here. It sets an incredible scene for a proposal in Milwaukee. This is one of those places that kind of doesn’t completely make sense unless you have been here. It is really hard to grasp the scale and the detail!
Discovery World
Celebrate your love for innovation and discovery at Discovery World, where interactive exhibits and stunning lakefront views create a unique setting for your proposal. Whether you pop the question amidst the museum's exhibits or on the outdoor deck overlooking Lake Michigan, Discovery World offers a memorable backdrop for your story.
Milwaukee Public Market
Indulge in culinary delights and celebrate your love amidst the vibrant energy of the Milwaukee Public Market. Whether you propose over a phenomenal dinner at one of the market's eateries or amidst the hustle and bustle of the market stalls, this culinary destination offers a memorable setting for your special moment.
The proximity to the Milwaukee Riverwalk (And did I mention the Third Ward yet?) is also super nice for variety in your proposal and engagement photos.
Schlitz Audubon Nature Center
Escape to nature at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, where scenic trails, tranquil woodlands, and breathtaking lake views provide a serene backdrop for your proposal.
Whether you choose to pop the question amidst the fall foliage or the blooming wildflowers of spring, the nature center offers a picturesque setting for your story.
Milwaukee County Parks
Explore the beauty of Milwaukee's parks and find the perfect spot to propose amidst some of nature's best. Whether you opt for a romantic picnic at Lake Park, a leisurely stroll through Grant Park's rose garden, or a sunset hike at Whitnall Park, the county parks offer countless opportunities for a memorable proposal photo shoot.
Pabst Rooftop
The Pabst Rooftop has some of the best views in Milwaukee! It is a perfect spot for a dreamy proposal.
Kohler Andrae State Park
Kohler Andrae State Park is about a 30ish minute drive from Milwaukee and very much worth it. I love Kohler Andrae so very much for proposals. The park has these beautiful sand dunes on the shore of Lake Michigan.
It is one of those places that doesn’t really look like Wisconsin, or at least the image of Wisconsin that most people have in their head. That is the reason that I love it so much. It looks like you went to southern California or something like that. An absolutely perfect place for a proposal.
Cedarburg Historic District
Transport yourselves back in time as you explore the quaint streets and charming shops of Cedarburg's Historic District. With its beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture and scenic river views, this romantic setting provides the perfect backdrop for a timeless proposal steeped in history and charm.
The Seven Bridges Park, Milwaukee
Experience the beauty of urban nature at Milwaukee's Three Bridges Park, where lush greenery, winding trails, and charming bridges create a romantic setting for a proposal. Whether you take a leisurely stroll or enjoy a bike ride along the Hank Aaron State Trail, you'll find plenty of picturesque spots to declare your love in this hidden urban oasis.
I would avoid Grant Park beach almost entirely and take the Seven Bridges trail down to the shore of Lake Michigan there. It is way less crowded and has some really amazing cliffs and shoreline.
More Milwaukee Proposal Ideas
Grab some ice cream at your favorite spot and propose.
Go out for some pizza and beer. With a shiny side of engagement ring.

Any Rooftop Parking Garage (For the views)
The Best Places To Propose in Wisconsin
Devil's Lake State Park
Located in the Baraboo Range, Devil's Lake State Park is a natural setting perfect for a proposal.
Hike to one of the park's scenic overlooks for breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding bluffs, or opt for a romantic picnic by the water's edge as you pop the question against the backdrop of Wisconsin's stunning wilderness. Both fall and summer here at Devils Lake are fantastic!
Like all tourist destinations, I recommend proposing here either before or after peak crowds. That means as close to sunrise or sunset as possible. Which is better for that sweet golden hour light anyways.
Parfrey’s Glen
Very close to Devil’s Lake State Park is one of my favorite places in the entire state of Wisconsin. Fall and summer here are my favorite. The proximity to Devil’s Lake also makes this a great place to get some really incredible variety in your proposal and engagement photos.
This is such a beautiful place, I love coming here after a big rain or something. It does make the hike up a little more interesting, but then the waterfall at the top has a lot more juice.
Like Devil’s Lake, I recommend trying to miss the peak crowds here by aiming for as close to sunrise and sunset as possible. That usually misses the largest crowds, and Parfrey’s Glen is a place that makes it harder to find our own space for photos.
Taliesin, Spring Green
Step into the world of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin in Spring Green. This architectural masterpiece provides a one-of-a-kind backdrop for a romantic proposal. Choose from the stunning gardens or the iconic Hillside Theater to set the stage for your proposal.
Cave of the Mounds
Embark on a subterranean adventure at Cave of the Mounds! Where you can propose in complete darkness.
Ok maybe not. Keep the lights on.
With the ancient rock formations, crystal-clear pools, and otherworldly beauty. This geological marvel offers the perfect opportunity to surprise your partner with a proposal they'll never forget.
The Dells of the Wisconsin River
Discover the awe-inspiring beauty of the Dells of the Wisconsin River for a proposal that's truly unforgettable. Escape to the scenic Peninsula State Park in Door County for a proposal surrounded by nature.
Whether you prefer a secluded beach setting or a panoramic overlook, this picturesque park offers countless romantic spots to declare your love amidst towering forests, pristine shorelines, and stunning vistas of Lake Michigan.
Cave Point specifically is my favorite spot. But the whole area is stunning.
The High Cliff State Park, Sherwood
Nestled along the eastern shores of Lake Winnebago, High Cliff State Park offers stunning views and diverse landscapes perfect for a memorable proposal.
Choose from scenic overlooks, wooded trails, or a romantic picnic by the water to create a magical moment amidst nature's splendor.
The Paine Art Center and Gardens, Oshkosh
Surround yourselves with the beauty of art and nature at the Paine Art Center and Gardens in Oshkosh.
Stroll hand in hand through meticulously landscaped gardens, explore historic estate grounds, and find the perfect spot among the blooming flowers and tranquil ponds to pop the question in this enchanting setting.
Lake Geneva
Lake Geneva can easily get its own blog post. There are so many great proposal options here that it is almost overwhelming.
Nestled in the heart of southern Wisconsin, Lake Geneva is a haven for romance. Picture-perfect sunsets, serene waters, and waterfront promenades set the stage for a dreamy proposal.
My proposal pick here is absolutely a private boat ride close to golden hour. Any time of the year when it is warm. But Fall is also spectacular here too! The views of the golden colors from a boat on the lake is magical.
You can also of course propose during a stroll along the lakeshore, Lake Geneva guarantees a romantic ambiance that will sweep your partner off their feet. It is seriously SO PRETTY.
Bonus: Upper Peninsula

Explore the stunning sea caves by kayak or hike along the rugged shoreline to find the perfect spot to pop the question amidst the breathtaking natural beauty of Lake Superior.
