Milwaukee Art Museum & Atwater Beach Engagement Photoshoot
Rainy, Cold, And Amazing Wisconsin Engagement Photoshoot
I get asked a lot, “What happens if it rains?”
My answer is simply “We are going to get wet.”
We got very wet, and cold, and the photos are amazing. The photos that come from these sessions in crazy weather conditions are always phenomenal. They might not be “ideal” or how you thought it was going to go.
But, if you buy into whatever conditions we are dealt, and make the most of it and enjoy it together with your partner anyways. That will tell your story in such a beautiful way that sunshine and rainbows never could.
Because you are not going to reschedule your wedding if it rains.
As the not so gentle breeze swept off Lake Michigan, Lisa and Colin embarked on a journey that would forever intertwine their story against the backdrop of the Milwaukee Lakefront and Atwater Beach.
This is one of those days that makes you want to reschedule. There is no sugar coating it. The weather was bad. Full on almost worst case scenario all day. I operate in all conditions, I have actually photographed in deserts, the arctic and everything in between.
These were the conditions all day. Rain, wind, cold, simply less than ideal. But Lisa and I were texting back and forth, and the decision was made.
We are all ready. Let’s go for it.
I had a magical feeling as the rain was supposed to stop pretty much right as the session was supposed to start. My commute to downtown Milwaukee was very wet.
Not super reassuring.
One thing that had me really excited was Lisa and Colin’s attitude going into the session. It is easy when the weather is not ideal, or bad, to want to call it. Postpone and hope for better conditions later. Afterall the two destinations for the session were the Milwaukee Lakefront around the Milwaukee Art Museum, and Atwater Beach. Two amazing engagement photo locations.
Both very much outside.
So when a couple is totally all in, and ready to face some adverse conditions. I know I am kind of in for a treat.
The weather did break right when we needed it to. Now make no mistake it was still very windy and cold, the rain stopped making it tolerable. And the photos from this engagement photography session in Milwaukee turned out to be some of my favorite photos this year so far.
Embracing The Early Wisconsin Spring
We met at the big orange sculpture by the Milwaukee Art Museum also known as The Calling. The session started by taking some photos at the Reiman Pedestrian Bridge which is one of my favorite locations to take photos. The architecture of the Milwaukee Art Museum is so unique and beautiful that we kind of made an orbit around the building and took photos on almost all sides.
One of the benefits of terrible weather is that there was no one else there. We absolutely had the place to ourselves. It was magical.
Then we made our way up along the shore of Lake Michigan making the quick drive up to Atwater Park. Where it was so windy that people were SURFING.
The wind was even worse here so we made use of our time quickly and efficiently. I always try to make use of the transitions between spots on these sessions and down on Atwater beach in these conditions I was firing photos away constantly. Trying to capture every chaotic moment with the wind that these two absolute legends of humans for braving the elements with me.
The moments that were captured here on this windy engagement session at Atwater Beach hold a special place in my heart.
Final Thoughts:
Just be prepared to make the most of whatever weather we get if you want outdoor photos. Of course if it is truly dangerous or down-pouring, yes we can reschedule.
But the photos that can come from a little rain might just be better anyways.
